Whether you are an avid hiker or someone who wants to spend a short amount of time out in the woods, you are in luck. There are some great places to hike in the area. Keep in mind that the hiking season in Florida runs from around October through May. Those are the best months to hike in this state. You can still hike during the other months, but the heat, humidity, and more bugs tend to suck some of the joy out.
Ponce Preserve – Located near the ocean, this place offers a view of a beautiful old tree. You can also go across the street to the boardwalk to sit out on the dock and watch the wildlife. This local park is a favorite among visitors and residents. It’s free to visit this park, so don’t miss it.
Lake Ashby – This park is a little off the beaten path, which is what makes it so unique. Nestled back in the woods, you can take a short hike, and take a seat on the dock and soak in the serenity. You may catch a glimpse of an alligator, wading birds, and turtles. There are also picnic tables, restrooms, and a children’s playground. This is also a free park to visit.
Doris Leeper – With several entrances, this park offers a few options for taking a hike. The best one, however, is the Bluff Overlook, which will take you back to a beautiful view of the marsh. There’s also a biking trail there (unpaved), which is popular all year long. There is no admission fee at this park. Note that there are also no restrooms available.
Canaveral National Seashore – This national park is a must-see for anyone who visits the area and loves nature. You will be treated to pristine beaches that have not had a building on the shoreline, as well as hiking trails and native shell mounds to view. There’s also a historical house you can visit, and they offer events throughout the year.
Hontoon Island – A hop, skip, and a short free boat ride across the water, and you will be on Hontoon Island. This island offers some great hiking as well as camping opportunities. They also have picnic tables, a playground, a little museum, and restrooms. It’s a great place to spend the day and play.
